Now you’ve decided to undertake a PR programme and to engage with the media, how well equipped do you feel to speak to journalists? Do you feel you would benefit from a half day
session to give you the tools required to get the most from contact with the media?
A media training programme will help you gain maximum advantage from media relations, avoid negative experiences and make sure that every interview counts. It will help you to identify the key messages you want to convey to your target audience and give suggestions on ways to introduce these key messages in the course of a media interview.
By undertaking some mock interviews with a professional broadcaster you will have the opportunity to practice with a seasoned journalist before the ‘real thing’ and by doing this you will gain confidence and maximise the opportunity to speak to your target audience. Even if you are experienced, it is often helpful to refresh media handling skills and to learn new ways to get the most from an interview.
If you impress the journalist, not only are you likely to get good coverage or favourable airing on radio or television, but you are more likely to ensure that your name is in the illusive journalist’s contact book. Good contacts and guests are valuable assets to any journalist. Your relationship with a journalist should be one of mutual respect and reliance. Media training can give you the skills required to give your organisation a place in the contact book, to give you an opportunity to further your media coverage.
Media training will provide a mixture of classroom theory that will make sure you know the ‘rules’ for a media interview and this will be followed by at least two mock interviews to practice implementing the rules. The content is tailored to your company and this will give you a chance to experience a genuine interview with a real journalist. By doing this in advance of your media activity, if the dress rehearsal shows that you need to work on a particular aspect of the interview, the live performance is more likely to run smoothly.
